Why was Asheville, North Carolina flooding so bad? Rare weather events and climate change are to blame
Helene produced such a large amount of rainfall due in part to a predecessor event, small (relative to a hurricane) regions of heavy rainfall produced ahead of a hurricane. These rainfalls produce a band of "deep tropical moisture" which, when mixed with a hurricane, cause significant rainfall.

The National Weather Service said Helene had cleared most of the Western North Carolina area by 11:21 a.m. Friday, but significant impacts including serious flooding were expected to continue into the weekend. Numerous areas and cities along the French Broad River are experiencing flooding and the river continues to rise.
