An arson suspect was arrested Thursday night near the Kenneth Fire area as fire crews continue battling flames burning near homes in Calabasas and West Hills. KTLA's Rick Chambers speaks with the citizens who detained the suspect before law enforcement arrived.

A fast-moving wildfire has burned nearly 800 acres near West Hills, northwest of Los Angeles, since breaking out earlier Thursday afternoon.

The alleged arson was reported about 5 and a half miles from the approximate start of the Kenneth fire, near Victory Boulevard west of Gilmore Street in West Hills. Residents in the area found the person and held him down until police arrived, KTLA reported.

At around 4:30 p.m., Los Angeles police responded to reports of a man attempting to light a fire in the 21700 block of Ybarra Road in Woodland Hills.

The arrest occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Ybarra Road, just south of the fire’s origin, after local residents reportedly spotted the suspect attempting to ignite a blaze. The residents detained him until police arrived, with photos shared on the Citizen app showing officers surrounding the scene where the man was taken into custody.

A 50-acre brush fire sparked in the Woodland Hills area near the 101 Freeway Thursday afternoon. The Los Angeles Fire Department said the fire is burning toward the south, relatively close to homes.
