The Mississippi Department of Corrections has announced the capture of a convicted killer who escaped on Christmas Eve.

Authorities in Mississippi say a "desperate" and "very dangerous" convicted murderer, Drew Johnson, is back in custody after escaping from prison Tuesday.

The convicted murderer broke out of South Mississippi Correctional Institution in Leakesville on Tuesday around 3:30 p.m., according to an alert from the Greene County Emergency Management office, shared by police in neighboring George County.

The man, who had been serving a life sentence, broke out of the state’s newest prison on Christmas Eve, officials said.
