Facebook, Instagram, Google and YouTube are clamping down on political ads in an effort to combat misinformation that could undermine trust in the results of a contentious election or stir up unrest.

Meta Platforms will extend its ban on new political ads after the U.S. election, maintaining the suspension until later this week, the Facebook-parent said in a blog post on Monday.

From Oct. 29 through Election Day on Nov. 5, new ads about politics, the election and social issues cannot be published on Facebook.

Meta will extend its ban on new election ads for the week leading up to the election until several days after the polls close, Axios has learned. The tech giant informed advertising partners about the shift on Monday.

The extension builds on policies Meta first enacted in 2020 to combat the spread of false information in the critical days surrounding an election.
