When a file extension is not associated with a program, however, you are prompted by a "How do you want to open this type of file" or "Windows can't open this file" dialog when you try to open it.

Double-click the INDD project to open it in InDesign. Click "File" and "Export" to open the Export dialog box.

Click Open. If the app that you want to use to open the file type is greyed out, it's because macOS doesn't think there's a valid association between the two.
