The New York Yankees are done after being eliminated by the Toronto Blue Jays, who'll be heading to their first AL Championship Series since 2016. Earlier in the day, the Detroit Tigers evened up their series with the Seattle Mariners after winning 9-3,
The Guardians spent most of September chasing down the Tigers and beat them on the final day of the regular season for the biggest comeback in the standings in MLB history. Fate conspired to pit the two teams against each other in the wild-card series, which naturally went to a winner-take-all Game 3.
All the way over on the west coast, the Mariners picked up a much-needed 3-2 win against the Tigers, with Jorge Polanco and Julio Rodríguez each playing hero. Polanco hit two solo home runs off of Detroit ace Tarik Skubal, then Rodríguez delivered the go-ahead double in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Blake Butera has held several positions within the Rays organization, and he most recently served as Tampa Bay's senior director of player development for the past two seasons. At 33 years old, Butera will become the youngest manager since Frank Quilici, who was hired by the Minnesota Twins in 1972 at the age of 33.
