Tesla launches cheaper Model Y
Digest more
Tesla's long-awaited 'more affordable' models are just stripped-down Y & 3, and cost more than they cost last week due to tax credit expiry.
Tesla dropped new “affordable” trims for the Model 3 and Model Y, but does $37,000 really sound affordable anymore? Between inflation, interest rates, and a thriving used EV market, buyers might see value in very different ways.
The Model 3 Standard starts at $36,990 (roughly £27,000), making it $5,500 less than the Model 3 Premium. If you’re after a cut-price Tesla, then check out the used Model 3 offerings on the Auto Express Buy A Car service, where you can pick one up for under £13,000.
Tesla has upgraded both the Model 3 and Y with longer ranges, and brought the front camera and indicator stalk back to the Model 3 -- but only overseas for now.
European markets also offer a Model 3 with a cheaper lithium-iron-phosphate battery, and updates to that unit now allow it to travel 344 miles instead of 319 miles in WLTP testing. If such chemistry were ever offered in the U.S., we'd predict it to travel between 250 and 300 miles per charge under EPA guidelines.
Tesla has been rumored to update the Model 3 with a bumper camera and turn signal stalk, and the new features are now live in Europe and Asia
