The crackdown on legacy admissions at private universities is coming to California. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill banning private colleges and universities in California from considering an applicant’s family or other connections to a school.

California universities can no longer favor the children of alumni in the admissions process starting next year. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill banning so-called legacy admissions on Monday at all private colleges and universities in the state. Legacies were already banned at public schools.

The colleges will still be allowed to admit students with alumni or donor ties, but they’ll no longer be able to grant them preferential treatment.
