There were almost 34,000 complaints about HMRC during 2022-23, while 4,742 complainants even got compensation at an average of £136, rising to £371 for those who escalated issues.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has received about 300 complaints from people who have been unable to view their tax information after logging into their account on its self assessment website.

Tax experts say part of the problem is that people often don’t know they have the right to escalate their complaint to the Adjudicator’s Office, where they can get an impartial hearing.
