Powerful Hurricane Erick has made landfall in Mexico’s western state of Oaxaca. That is according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Erick came ashore down southern Mexico's Pacific coast Thursday morning as a Category 3 major hurricane. It landed between the resort cities of Acapulco and Puerto Escondido.

Hurricane Erick has made landfall along the western coast of Mexico east of Acapulco as a Category 3 storm. Maximum sustained winds were 125 mph, dropping from 140 mph only hours earlier.

The storm had been a Category 4 hurricane as it bore down from the eastern Pacific toward Mexico. The authorities ordered evacuations in Oaxaca and Guerrero.
