In the ever-changing world of conference realignment, Texas State's talks with the Mountain West Conference have stalled, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel on Tuesday, and the school, in fact, has informed the Sun Belt Conference that it won't be leaving.

Intercollegiate athletics at the University of Texas at El Paso are about to enter into a new era. UTEP announced Tuesday, Oct. 1, that it has accepted a formal invitation to join the Mountain West Conference and rejoin some former rivals.

Should UTEP be extended an invitation and opts to leave Conference USA, the MWC would have eight members with seven holding full-time status (Hawai'i is a football-only member). The NCAA requires eight full members for a league to be recognized as an FBS conference.
