PHILADELPHIA -- A woman's death was ruled a suicide over a decade ago. Now, it will be reexamined after the original medical examiner said he no longer believes she intentionally stabbed herself to death. The City of Philadelphia settled two lawsuits Monday brought by the parents of Ellen Greenberg.

The cause of death of Philadelphia school teacher Ellen Greenberg, who was found brutally stabbed in 2011, will be reinvestigated after a pathologist who previously ruled her death a suicide reversed course last week.

Ellen Greenberg was found dead in 2011 in her Philadelphia apartment with 20 knife wounds and numerous bruises. Authorities ruled her death a suicide. Fourteen years later, the pathologist who performed her autopsy says he’s changed his mind.

Greenberg, 27, was found dead by her fiancé, who returned to their home in Philadelphia to find the door’s swing bar lock in use. After forcing his way in, her fiancé, Sam Goldberg, discovered Greenberg dead with a 10-inch knife in her chest.

The Greenbergs are also asking the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court to allow them standing to have their daughter’s death certificate amended from suicide to undetermined. That case is yet to be heard.
