Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora provided a Marcelo Mayer update ahead of Friday's game against the Miami Marlins.

BOSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox infielder Marcelo Mayer said Sunday that he’ll have season-ending surgery on his right wrist. The 22-year-old Mayer injured the wrist in late July, got an injection to try and come back, but decided to have surgery. He said he has a tear that hadn’t improved with the anti-inflammatory injection.

The recovery is expected to be three months and so he should be ready for spring training 2026, manager Alex Cora said. The 22-year-old infielder received an anti-inflammation injection Aug. 2, but it didn’t work the way the Red Sox had hoped.
