Mexico's president on Monday hit back at U.S. criticism that her government was not doing enough to combat fentanyl, calling for the United States to do more to arrest drug traffickers on its own turf and stop the flow of weapons south across the border.

President Trump announced in letters posted to social media on Saturday that he would place a 30 percent tariff on goods from the European Union and Mexico, upending months of careful negotiations and disrupting America’s economic relationships with two of its biggest trading partners.

The percentage of Mexicans who approve of the U.S. has dropped 32 points since President Donald Trump returned to office in January, according to a Pew survey.

When it comes to the U.S. president, the vast majority of Mexican adults (91%) say they have little to no confidence in Trump to do the right thing regarding world affairs. By comparison, a smaller majority of Mexicans (60%) expressed little or no confidence in Biden in 2024.

The move comes amid a separate push by President Trump to increase tariffs on dozens of U.S. trading partners, including Mexico, which was told over the weekend to expect 30% tariffs starting in August.

Mexico's gas imports from the United States hit a record high in April, increasing by 2.7% over the first four months of 2025.
