Ultium Cells, a joint venture (JV) between General Motors (GM) and South Korea’s LG Energy Solution, is set to commence the production of low-cost lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells at its Spring Hill facility in Tennessee,

Ultium Cells LLC will upgrade its manufacturing plant in Tennessee to produce lower-cost lithium iron phosphate – or LFP – battery cells.

GM has announced that a retooling of the Ultium Spring Hill battery plant in Tennessee will begin this year to start producing cost-effective LFP cells by 2027.

GM said Monday it is working with joint venture partner LG Energy Solution to upgrade its Ultium battery factory to make lithium-iron-phosphate cells for the automaker’s low-cost EVs.
