Meet the Grizzly Bears of Oakland Zoo. All born in 2017, our 2 sets of brother bears come to us from Alaska. Though we call them all grizzlies, two of the brothers are true grizzlies and the other two are considered brown bears. The cubs came to us as orphans because unfortunately, their mothers were euthanized due to being “problematic” bears.

Spanning 3 continents, it is the most widespread bear on earth. Possibly 3 different subspecies (N American grizzly, Kodiak, Eurasian brown) exist. Muscular shoulders and large claws allow them to dig up small mammals, insects, and roots better than black bears. They can swim well.

The American Black Bear is the smallest of the three bears species found in North America, and are found only in North America. Black bears have short, non-retractable claws that give them an excellent tree-climbing ability.

The grizzly bears shown are two sets of brothers who arrived at Oakland zoo in 2017, from Alaska. During the winter months, the bears go into torpor, a period of reduced activity and lower metabolic rates. Oakland Zoo is committed to humans living in harmony with black bears in California, particularly in the Tahoe Basin region. When residents and visitors leave food out or easily accessible, it causes conflict with bears that can lead to the death of a bear or a human.
