The pedals are one of the mechanisms on the organ that originally drew me to the instrument. They offer a wider variety of sound than a piano can. As much as I loved playing the piano, I was always more interested in symphonic music, orchestral color, film music, and video game music. The organ is uniquely equipped to let me access that full spectrum of sound and texture in a single instrument. In this video, I’m demonstrating some of the reed stops on the organ. Reeds are among the most powerfu

Practicing the Great Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, BWV 542. It is one of the most dramatic and technically demanding works in the organ repertoire. The Fantasia is full of bold gestures and sudden shifts, and the Fugue (shown here) drives forward with nonstop energy and tight counterpoint. I played it years ago, but life pulled me away from difficult repertoire for a while. It feels good to return to music like this and rebuild the technique. What pieces are you working on that push you right n

Zipoli’s Pastorale works well in church because it is simple, clear, and easy to prepare. The steady rhythm and gentle melodic lines fall naturally under the hands, which makes it quick to learn and reliable for busy Sundays. The piece is a pastoral so it ties directly to shepherd imagery and the quiet mood is often associated with Advent and Christmas. The soft drones and calm phrases create a peaceful atmosphere that supports prayer without drawing attention to itself. It is practical, devotio

Bach’s Toccata in E minor BWV 914 is an early keyboard work, probably composed during his Arnstadt years. Technically, the piece is well suited to beginner and intermediate organists. It is a free form and gives the feeling of improvisation. You simply must give this piece a go! It would function well as a prelude or an offertory. It is and will always be one of my favorites! #organist #organ #washingtondc #musiceducation #composer #bach #bwv914 #organpedagogy #churchmusic #organistlife #baroque

It is far more fun to jump into a hymn with no plan 😅 If you haven’t started yet you should get into improvising during your services. It is a long tradition and the best musical ideas come from performing under pressure. It may not be a hit every time, but it will be interesting ☺️#organist #organ #washingtondc #musiceducation #composer | Paul Griffin

The room is just as important as the organ itself. Here at the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land the room is perfect for music making. The dome and limestone floors create a resonance that last for a few seconds. The tricky part is accompanying congregations. The room is so large sometime you hear the delay from those who are seated far away. #organist #organ #washingtondc #musiceducation #composer | Paul Griffin

I love tiny organs. More commonly known as a continuo organ; this little instrument as useful as ever. It is great for accompanying cantors or solo singers. If you are having a group perform a piece from the baroque period, this little instrument will give you an authentic experience. #organist #christmas #organ #washingtondc #composer | Paul Griffin

John Stanley was one of the leading English organists and composers of the late Baroque and early Classical period. He lost his sight as a child and developed an outstanding musical ear and memory. At age fourteen he became Organist of the Temple Church in London, which made him well known throughout England. His music is clear, melodic, and very useful in church settings. His twelve organ voluntaries remain some of the most played works in the English organ tradition. Voluntary IX comes from St

Are you looking for a great piece of music to work on? Bach’s BWV 553 is one of my favorites. It’s often overlooked because it’s labeled as a “beginner” piece, but I think it’s a mistake to view music in such a black and white way. Complexity does not automatically equal beauty, and something simple can be just as valuable as the most complex symphonies. The C major Prelude shown here is a wonderful example of how simplicity and beauty can exist together. I hope you give it a try. #organist #org
