GETTYSBURG (Pennsylvania) — Around 1 p.m. on July 3, 1863, over 150 Confederate guns began an artillery bombardment. In order to save valuable ammunition for the infantry attack that they suspected would follow, the Federal artillery, under the command of General Henry Hunt, initially held its fire.
