Fisheries Compliance Unit officers conduct patrols at night across the Northern Territory. Recent patrols in the Mary River System and at Shady Camp barrage in response to reports of the illegal use of live bait, cast nets and possession limit exceedances identified that the Fisheries Compliance officers are far from the scariest thing observing fishers in these areas. The Darwin Aquaculture Centre has been producing and stocking Manton Dam with Barramundi since 2004. There is no natural recruitment of barra, so every barra in the dam is a stocked fish. Over 1 million fingerlings have been released into the dam to enhance recreational fishing opportunities.🎣 In recent years, larger Barramundi have been released with Amateur Fishermen's Association NT (AFANT) tags. Fishers can report their tagged fish capture online: https://afant.com.au/rec-fisher-research/re

Deployment of the 4 new artificial reefs is now well underway with 3 reefs Lee point Wide, Central Gutters and Dundee complete. The other reef, Adelaide River, is expected to be completed by the end of December. Each reef consists of 29 modules clustered into 7 groups to cover an area of approximately 2.5 hectares. Whilst the reefs may initially attract fish within the first few weeks it will take 2-3 years for them to develop into productive habitat. In readiness for the completion of the reefs

A big thank you to everyone who contributed their time, shared their thoughts and provided input to the Recreational Fishing Development Plan. It was a truly collaborative effort with the Amateur Fishermen's Association NT (AFANT), the NT Guided Fishing Industry Association, the Recreational Fishing Advisory Committee, as well as hundreds of recreational fishers and stakeholders from around the Territory. This short video provides a glimpse into the innovative 12-month planning process that cons

Don’t Feed the Sharks! It’s not uncommon to lose a hooked fish to sharks. This is because sharks learn to associate fishing vessels with an easy feed. Fishos that continually release injured fish (barotrauma, stress, etc.), or process their catch at their fishing location, are major contributors to this problem. The following advice will help reduce the chances of sharks plundering your favourite fishing spots. • Reef fish are not suitable for catch and release in water deeper than 10 metres due

Earlier this year, staff from Fisheries travelled to Groote Eylandt to work with the Anindilyakwa Land and Sea Rangers. Fisheries staff delivered accredited aquatic biosecurity training on how to collect reliable scientific data. Funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, this unit of competency goes toward the Certificate III Fisheries Compliance, an important qualification for rangers as they can apply to become a Fisheries Inspector after compl

🤚🎣Don’t move too fast! Even the slightest move will send these little guys scampering for the murky water. Popeye mullet are around 25cm long and swim in super shallow water. By staying close to the water’s edge, they can avoid large predatory fish like Barra. Popeye mullet move in small groups and glide over the soft fluid mud with their large pectoral fins extended. And they move FAST! What are your tips to catching a Popeye? 🎥Thanks to Jo for sharing this video with us | Fisheries NT

Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Reef Fish Protection Area Monitoring. NT Fisheries have been monitoring the Greater Darwin Region reef fish protection areas for the last four years – collecting over 400 hours of video using baited remote underwater video systems (BRUVS). Processing this video, frame by frame to identify fish species, is time and labour intensive. In collaboration with Microsoft, NT Fisheries has researched the application of computer vision and machine learning to automat

On a recent patrol at Shady Camp and the Mary River Fish Management Zone, Fisheries Officers from the Fisheries Compliance Unit were quickly joined by a group of very keen local fishers, who showed everyone how it should be done and put a few to shame. We are lucky enough to share our great fishing with a lot of other “Territorians” like these pelicans. They show the system is in good health and that if you’re able and good enough, you, too, can catch a feed. We have different fishing rules in t

Some Fishos may be aware that 5000 golden snapper were released into Darwin waters over the past few weeks. These snappers have been tagged with external tags and the recapture data will play a vital key to help researchers discover more about the species’ development and behaviours. For more information on what to do if you to catch a tagged fish visit nt.gov.au/marine/recreational-fishing/catching-a-tagged-fish or download the FREE "NT FISHING MATE" app for your phone and or tablet. | Fisherie

Spending time on fishing and research vessels, often for days and sometimes weeks is a regular part of many Fisheries NT staff duties. Fisheries research scientist Amy recently completed her certificate of safety training, which amongst many other safety at sea topics, includes a practical on righting a life raft. We hope it’s never needed, but having the training and knowledge of what to do in an emergency at sea helps to make Amy’s work a little bit safer. | Fisheries NT

Boost for Fisho's as Artificial Reefs Installed at Stokes Hill Wharf Stokes Hill Wharf is set to become an even more attractive fishing spot for land-based Territory fishos with 15 small artificial reefs deployed. The installation of purpose-built artificial reefs not only delivers exciting new fishing areas, but also reduces pressure on existing natural reef and fish stocks to support the long-term sustainability of fisheries. Possession limits – what does that mean? In the Northern Territory, a personal General Possession Limit (GPL) of 15 fish applies. This is the maximum number of fish a person may have in their possession at any time other than in their permanent residence. Vessel and species-specific limits also apply. A permanent residence does not include temporary occupancy such as caravanning or camping but rather a fixed address, which can be substantiated by a photo ID or similar document. Fish in your boat
