Exciting news from base camp in Mongolia! Our team has added two more snow leopards to our groundbreaking study. The first is a female born in 2020 and the daughter of another cat in our study, One-Eye (F14). She is likely to give birth soon (if she hasn’t already!). The second is a young female who recently dispersed from her mother and siblings this past winter. In fact, we have been tracking her mother, Wilian, since 2024, who is also likely to give birth soon. Our senior scientist mentioned

Our last cat update from Tost, Mongolia for the summer! Some cats didn’t show up on our cameras last year - but that’s not necessarily bad news. Dagina is one of the snow leopards we missed in 2022, though we did catch a glimpse of two of her sub-adult cubs that are about 18 months old in these photos. Dagina is over 13 years old and one possibility is that she has reduced the size of her home range, which we have seen occur with other aging snow leopards. We still hope to see her on camera in 2

Right now, in the remote peaks of Mongolia, cameras are quietly documenting moments most people will never witness: wild snow leopards roaming through their mountain kingdoms. Over the next two weeks we’ll introduce you to the residents of Tost Protected Area, where we conduct our long-term snow leopard research. In a world inundated with selfies, these stand out, enhancing our understanding of this magnificent species and guiding our efforts to protect them. First up, meet Kurzawa. This old cat

Strange behavior! Our researchers have documented a previously unseen behavior: a snow leopard digging for and drinking water in Mongolia’s Tost Mountains. Tost is part of the Gobi Desert and receives very little rain. However, we know from our long-term study that the area hosts a stable population of snow leopards. While this cat’s behavior is fascinating, we do not yet know if it is a learned behavior of one individual or a common adaptation for snow leopards in arid landscapes. Learning more

It's International Snow Leopard Day. Last month, WCS teams and partners from across High Asia gathered in Mongolia, one of the snow leopard’s strongholds, to shape a shared vision for the next decade of conservation. Working alongside governments, communities, and scientists, we are focused on keeping mountain ecosystems connected and resilient in a changing climate, for both people and wildlife. As we celebrate International Snow Leopard Day, now officially recognized by the United Nations, we

Mongolia's Snow Leopards: On our latest holiday to Mongolia's beautiful Altai Mountains and Hustai National Park, our group had this sighting of three Snow Leopards! We thank guest, Brian Clasper, for sending in this footage. This 12-day tour spends 6 nights based in a remote 'ger' camp in the foothills of the Altai Mountains, a site that offers an excellent chance of seeing the mystical Snow Leopard – and without having to brave the harsh physical and climatic conditions so often associated wit

Snowleopard Mongolia on Instagram: "Snow leopards can't roar but they CAN yowl ❄️ Snow leopards make sounds similar to those made by other large cats, including a purr, mew, hiss, growl, moan, and yowl. However, snow leopards cannot roar due to the physiology of their throat, and instead make a non-aggressive puffing sound called a ‘chuff’. Yowling snow leopard video credit of The Buffalo Zoo"

Dan O’Neill on Instagram: "A moment from collaring season in Mongolia. This young female snow leopard (named F16 as she is the 16th female caught in the project) though about a year old had reached her full size around the neck and shoulders and as such could comfortably fit an adult collar - if she were male, that would not be safe as her muscles would significantly grow during adolescence. Nonetheless, the team decided to remove the collar from this young cat, just to be absolutely certain the
